Information About Reservation Services
WHAT IS NUTMEG?
Nutmeg is a reservation service representing Bed & Breakfasts and Inns in Connecticut and bordering states of New York,
and Massachusetts. For over 15 years the agency has made reservations for travelers with special attention to their needs.
WHY USE A RESERVATION SERVICE?
Private home B&B's will not be widely publicized, and may not wish to take walk-in travelers. They sometimes exclusively use a reservation service, which acts as their "front desk". Quality reservation services inspect all properties, are familiar with the areas they represent, and can objectively recommend lodging choices, making the process a streamlined success. All reservations, including detailed directions, are confirmed in writing. Nutmeg will help select a perfect getaway B&B, the most convenient business trip accommodation, or the ideal location from which to enjoy your family's special events, and our gift certificates are personal remembrances for any occasion.
WHAT IS A BED & BREAKFAST?
A true B&B differs from an inn or a hotel; it is a private home hosted by the owners. B&B's have anywhere from one to many rooms in addition to living quarters for the hosts. Often the rooms have private baths though some baths
are shared with other guests or with the hosts. Each B&B is a unique lodging alternative, and in many cases, the most convenient, affordable accommodation option. Breakfast is
usually included. Guests needing extended stays find B&B amenities more like home.
WHAT ABOUT THE HOSTS?
B&B hosts are warm, caring people who enjoy sharing their home and community with others, going out of their way to make each stay a pleasant one. They also allow as much privacy as desired and are especially sensitive to the "first time" B&B guest. Advice on dinner spots, attractions or recreation adds that special dimension to B&B travel.
WHAT INFORMATION DOES A GUEST NEED TO GIVE THE SERVICE?
Guest should have ready date(s) of stay, name, home address, telephone numbers, number of people (adults and/or children), special needs such as smoking, allergies to pets or foods, type of breakfast desired, type of bed(s) desired, private or shared bath, and price range preferred. For private home B&B's, arrival time is very important. Hosts will usually try to be flexible, but they do want an approximate arrival time so they are home to greet you. If you find you are running earlier or later than the arrival time agreed upon, you need to contact the host.
WHAT IS THE METHOD OF PAYMENT?
The agency takes a credit card for all reservations and at the time the reservation is made the method of payment will be established. Payment is expected in advance of the stay; in case of a last minute reservation, payment by check or cash will be made to the host. Since most smaller B&B's don't accept credit cards, the service will have to process credit card payments. Reservation services usually have a small booking fee and if there is a state lodging tax it will apply to B&B's.
WHAT IF THE RESERVATION MUST BE CANCELLED?
The cancellation policy for B&B's is different from those of hotels. It is explained and documented in the reservation confirmation, and at the time the reservation is made.
